Gestational diabetes is a condition in which blood sugar levels become elevated during pregnancy. It develops when hormonal changes affect the body's ability to use insulin effectively. Although it often resolves after delivery, uncontrolled gestational diabetes can increase pregnancy and delivery-related risks.

Diagnosis is usually made through blood glucose screening during pregnancy. Management may include a balanced diet, regular physical activity when medically appropriate, blood sugar monitoring, and medications or insulin when required.

Regular monitoring of the mother's blood glucose and the baby's growth is essential. Appropriate treatment can significantly reduce complications and support a healthy pregnancy and delivery.

Women with gestational diabetes also require follow-up after childbirth because of an increased future risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
